Announcement of new Carrigdhoun GAA President   02/05/2022

The following is from the Chairman's address at the recent South East Junior A Championship Draws.

"One of the highlights of this event is to welcome and introduce the newly elected President of the South East Board, Dermot O'Brien. Dermot was elected with the unanimous support of all our clubs at our last board meeting and I want to take this opportunity to congratulate him and wish him well during his term in office.

Dermot O'Brien, a very proud and life long member of Valley Rovers GAA Club has surely left an indelible mark in our Association by his great commitment and service as a player, officer and a leading administrator. He has work and contributed at all levels.

He excelled as an outstanding centre back with his club winning the South East Championship and was unlucky not to win a county medal. His input at club level was always very positive and progressive. When the Division were looking for talented people for office they elected Dermot as Treasurer. In those days in the 1970's he joined Joe O'Driscoll and Mylie Collins, Chairperson & Secretary respectively. Together they were a wonderful team of reforming and progressive officers and Dermot brought a huge amount to the table. He commanded  widespread regard and respect near and far. In his time as a General Manager in the Cork Savings Bank he was instrumental in arranging sponsorship deals for the Cork County Board Hurling & Football Competitions. His energies and genuine goodwill were always prevailing.

Dermot is a member of a truly patriotic family, his late brother Canon Michael O'Brien was arguably one of Cork's greatest hurling coaches at schools, colleges, club & county level including within the Carrigdhoun Division. They are a great family who have given so much and we are proud to have a member of that family elected as our esteemed President.

In his new role, he takes over from one of his old friends and South East colleague, Joe O'Driscoll of Shamrocks who was called to his eternal reward. I wish to thank Joe for all his work for this Board when he was an officer and a great President".
