Valley Rovers showcase their title credentials

By Joe Kennefick

 Valley Rovers             2-22

Ballymartle     `           0-4

Reigning champions Valley Rovers had little difficulty when they easily brushed aside the challenge of Ballymartle in this semi final to set up a final meeting with neighbours Ballinhassig.

Having come perilously close to relinquishing their crown the previous weekend to Carrigaline, Valley Rovers were never in danger here and they remain the team to beat.

Played at a cold and blustery Belgooly on Saturday afternoon the winners hit the front with a Gary Farrell penalty in the fifth minute and playing against a very strong wind they had this wrapped up at half time when they led 1-13 to 0-3.   For Ballymartle this was a game they will want to forget.   They started brightly and with a strong wind behind them they had the opening two points of the game, but once Farrell goaled after John Cottrell was pulled down they were second best.

Valley Rovers’ victory was built on a superb midfield display from Dara Murphy and Gary Farrell and a fast moving half-forward trio Mark and Jack Murphy and Eoin Fallow, while John Cottrell and Dara Looney looked dangerous every time they got possession.

Shane Cummins and Rickard Cahalane had Ballymartle two points ahead before Farrell’s goal put the Rovers a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

A succession of points from the Murphys, Dara, Jack and Mark, Cottrell, Fallon and Thomas O’Brien left the champions 1-13 to 0-2 ahead at the interval.

Valleys continued their dominance in the second half as the pace of the game decreased.  Fallon and Looney kicked further points before Jack Murphy cut through the Ballymartle defence to score his side’s second goal.

Ballymartle to their credit tried their best and they had good performances from Joe Butler and Cahalane but Valley Rovers were just too strong and they head for the divisional final in good form.
